    Default Highlights in first trimester

    Hi ladies

About a week ago, I made an appointment to have my roots done tomorrow. I didn't even think about the fact that this could possibly be a no no in my first trimester. I have just been googling like crazy and everything I've seen states that even though there is no conclusive evidence, one should rather wait until after the first trimester before highlighting. This seems to be even more so the case if one dyes their hair.

I just don't see the link. How the hell could any of the product get into your blood stream and reach the baby? And if it does, then surely it would be a no no for the duration of the pregnancy and not just the first trimester???

I sent my nurse coordinator at VL an sms asking the same question. Her response was that if I am asking the question, then I should rather wait. What the hell is that supposed to mean. Give me hard facts lady!!!

Anyway, I will gladly walk around looking like trash for the next couple of months if it will harm my babies. If not, then I don't see why I should, right?!?!

Hope you ladies have some advise

    Hi Mumsoon,

My gynae said it is fine to highlight hair. According to him if the color gets absorbed through the hair and into the bloodstream they would have developed a whole lot of hair products and medication by now benefitting from just that... I highlighted my hair from 12 weeks and did it right through my pregnancy.

Strangely enough VL also told me not to do so and the regrowth looked terrible. Someone actually asked me if I was pregnant because I was not coloring my hair.

I coloured and highlighted my hair right through from about 9 weeks. Doc and hairdresser said it was perfectly safe.

I personally waited until 12 weeks just to be in the "safe zone" and then did it once or twice again but as you get larger (esp with twins) you are not going to want to sit in the hairdresser for hours and be uncomfortable. The best thing I did was start going a bit darker as then the regrowth didnt look so bad. SOmething you may consider if your natural colour is darker.

Thanks ladies for all the advise. After not getting the answer I wanted from the nurse coordinator, I decided to sms Dr G and ask him directly. He messaged me back last night saying "vegetable dye only, no chemicals like peroxide". I asked the question to someone I've placed all my trust in throughout this process, so I guess I have to accept his answer, like it or not. I'm definitely not going to take any chances here. Think I need to go and get myself a fashionable brown paper bag to wear over my head for the next 3 weeks!

I'm not gonna lie, I'm pretty bleak about this. DH thinks I am totally ridiculous to get upset over something like "hair"! I guess I'm also over emotional with all these hormones going rampant in my body

@ Mila, it seems you were right about VL hey! I'm surprised they are so overly cautious.
@ Dee, thanks for the tip. I think I will start (from 13 weeks) going for a mix of highlights and low lights so that my regrowth is not as bad
    like you say

    Hugs to all

I waited for 12 weeks to dye my hair just to be safe, and I was careful with all my make up and body products I used nothing with parabens for those first few months, now I am back to normal.
